In the modern era, we cannot imagine what it’s like to be without a cellphone in our hand in any given time. But in the end of the day, before you go to sleep, you might put it next you after a late-night scrolling on Facebook and Instagram, which is a big mistake. So why shouldn’t you sleep with your phone by your pillow? Let’s find out.
Research shows that 35% of all smartphone users check their phones within five minutes of waking up and continue using their phones until the very minute they fall asleep. Studies also show that 53% of cell phone users keep their phones and tablets for charging on or near their pillows when going to bed. Doing so can be highly dangerous both physically and emotionally.
Cell phone addiction is causing multiple health problems these days. People who use their phones right before sleep or sleep with their phones by their pillow are at the greatest risk of these health concerns. Here are some of the health hazards caused by sleeping with your phone so close by.
Low cognitive development
Having a cell phone by your side when in bed can be very tempting for most users. Constantly being on the phone when you’re supposed to be asleep, can negatively impact the health of the brain and severely impede cognitive development.
It has been observed that the light produced by phone screens confuses the brain and prevents the secretion of melatonin, which is the hormone that induces sleep. When this happens, your brain stays wide awake throughout the night and leads to low cognitive strength the next day.
Muscular degeneration of the eye
The light released by phones cause the photoreceptor cells in the retina to die, leading to muscular degeneration. When this condition worsens, the patient slowly becomes blind. Your vulnerability to cell phone-induced muscular degeneration is very high at night, when the darkness makes the light from the screen harsher and sharper.
Infertility and cancer
Although the exact science behind this is as yet unknown, it has been observed that the radiation, frequencies, and chemicals emitted by the phone when charging or when switched on can harm the body, killing sensitive cells and damaging nerve endings. Sometimes, this leads to problems like infertility at a very young age. Cell phone radiation has also been traced as the root cause of certain forms of brain and ear tumors in children. Keeping the phone by your side when you sleep can increase the chances of developing infertility and cancer.
It appears that the blue light that comes out of our cellular devices makes our sleep more light, while also making it difficult for us to sleep in the first place.
Severe burns or electrocution
There have been many instances of cell phone chargers exploding due to overheating or from excessive radiation exposure. If the phone is on your pillow or next to you as you sleep, it makes you highly-vulnerable to burns and/or electrocution, which may even become fatal if you aren’t careful.
